2018 Fundica Roadshow Vancouver Winner Announcement (Views: 3046)

Mon, 11 Jun 2018

On May 31st, the Fundica Roadshow (FRS), a nation-wide pitch competition for Canadian tech startups, marked the midway point in their 2018 tour with the announcement of their Vancouver city winners. FRS saw seventeen pre-seed, seed, and series A startups pitch at their Vancouver event at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, but at the end of the day, only three companies took home trophies: Lumen5, ChatterHigh, and ViewsIQ.

Lumen5, represented at the Fundica Roadshow by co-founder and CEO Michael Cheng, is a video creation platform, powered by artificial intelligence, that allows brands and businesses to produce engaging video content for marketing purposes at scale; ChatterHigh, represented by founder and CEO Lee Taal, is a platform that inspires students to be personally engaged about their post-secondary aspirations by gamifying the post-secondary research experience; and ViewsIQ, represented by CEO Herman Lo, is a medical technology company that is digitizing patient samples microscopically to disrupt the pathology practice.

The winners received an array of prizes, including three months of free office space at WeWork, $20,000 in Google Cloud hosting credits, a free, one-year subscription to Intuit Quickbooks, and a cloud package from CANARIE. In addition to these prizes, all three startups will move onto the FRS grand finale in Montreal on July 12th. There, they will compete against the other city stop finalists for an equity investment award of up to $500,000, powered by Panache Ventures.

“The Western Canadian entrepreneurial scene is scary good in size and sophistication,” said Fundica president Mike Lee, “and throughout the day, we heard many impressive pitches from entrepreneurs based in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C.. It was really difficult to pick just three to fly out to the finals in Montreal on July 12th.”

“…Fundica was a great experience,” said Michael Cheng of Lumen5. “Some of the judges asked us great questions, things like, what is your customer acquisition cost, things that, when we’re heads-down working on the business, we don’t really think about…so those questions really got us thinking about [what] will become really important in the next 1-2 years.”

The FRS stop in Vancouver was preceded by an equally successful event in Montreal and will be followed by a highly anticipated event in Toronto on June 28th. Parties interested in attending the FRS can still purchase tickets to Toronto or the Montreal finale.
