To assist the growth of resource-based
companies and Alberta’s economy, Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures
has been offering its support on an open call basis by enabling the
enterprises to hire recent Master’s and PhD graduates to carry out the
company’s research activities.
Industry r&D Associates is a program that responds to the increasing needs of the R&D personnel of Alberta industries. With an annual stipend of $5,000 from Tech Futures and an annual research allowance of $7,000 to cover the qualified costs, this program component aims to increase research expertise in companies based out of Alberta.
This program favours Alberta-based research ‘gazelles’ or companies that are making their mark in the industry. Start-ups, SMEs or even large-sized companies can qualify to receive the funding. The company must possess good in-house labs and computing equipment and other required materials to carry out the research activities. Click here to know more about the company eligibility.
Through this funding, it is possible to recruit 1-3 research associates for projects such as pre-competitive research, prototype development, demonstration and feasibility studies of innovative technology. The funding is granted for two years and sponsors candidates who have completed their graduate studies (Master’s or PhD degree) within 5 years of application date. The maximum annual allocated grant of $62,000 can be used to cover the following expenses:
• Relocation expenses
• Scientific materials and supplies
• Books, periodicals and journal subscriptions
• Library, computer hardware and software, and minor equipment costs
• Professional development and technical training
• Travel expenses to scientific conferences, and for research collaborations and business meetings.
