Are you a Canadian company that is looking to hire? The Government of Canada has launched a funding  program for Canadians with disabilities. The Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities helps Canadians with disabilities to develop skills and experience required for employment and self-employment purposes. Minister of State Social Development announced that the State has opened the gates for proposals starting 6th August 2014 until October 1, 2014. “To support Canada’s long-term prosperity, Canadian employers must tap into all available talent”, stated the Honorable Minister of State Candice Bergen, while declaring the program open. The main focus of the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities is to increase the labor participation of persons with disabilities with the aim to achieve greater employment rates.

The OF program offers a wide range of activities that can be tailored to meet the needs of the individuals with disabilities. Businesses, organizations (including not-for-profit), individuals with disabilities, public health and educational institutions, band or tribal councils and municipal governments are eligible to apply for this program. Participants are recruited by the funding recipients. Click here to learn more.

Since its inception, a number of associations and institutions have benefited enormously from the OF program and were able to increase their chances of allowing their pupils and members to enhance their employability and required skills."We would like to thank the Government of Canada for their funding and support of the EntreActive program. This program has allowed people with disabilities in Greater Victoria access to classes, mentors and further support, to help them realize their entrepreneurial vision and turn it into a reality.", stated Bonnie Gillatly, Program Coordinator at Greater Victoria Economic Development Association when asked how OF program helped their association.

The decisions to grant funds are based on national, regional and local priorities, community needs, program terms and conditions, and available funding. Activities such as enhanced employment assistant services, employer awareness, and self-employment are some of the few which are eligible for obtaining grants.
