The government of British Colombia understands that early-stage technology entrepreneurs face many challenges not the least of which is defining a successful business model that will enable them to bring their innovations to market. Based on Steve Blank's Customer Development Model and Eric Ries' Lean Start-up framework, the Venture Acceleration Program provides early-stage entrepreneurs with the valuable assistance they need to achieve this goal.

Most technology innovators are well-grounded in technical know-how but are lacking in knowledge of other areas that are vital to the creation and operation of a successful business. Available in all regions of British Colombia through program delivery partners, BC’s Venture Acceleration Program has created a Venture Growth Model that defines a four-stage growth process for start-ups—Product Validation, Market Validation, Market Penetration, and Market Expansion.

Key components of the program include the Venture Growth Model, which helps entrepreneurs accelerate the process of defining a proven business model for sustained profitability, ongoing coaching from experienced delivery partners and work closely with entrepreneurs to set the right objectives and priorities and provide structured management oversight and guidance on a regular and ongoing basis. They also direct the formation of a highly experienced coaching team which includes accredited Mentors whose specific domain knowledge or management expertise match the entrepreneur’s needs. Mentors contribute their extensive knowledge and skills, providing “on demand” skills and expertise on a volunteer basis.

Participants in the program will learn from successful technology entrepreneurs how to critically evaluate the fundamentals of their business ideas, develop their entrepreneurial skills, overcome barriers to success, and prepare their company to be investment-ready. They will also have the opportunity of networking with peers who share the same goals and challenges.

You cannot argue with success, and the BC Venture Acceleration Program has definitely been successful. Since it was launched in 2012, 102 BC companies have participated in the program generating over $3 million in revenue, adding 303 jobs to the BC economy, and attracting $13.6 million in investment. Contributing to this success are the program’s 18 Executives in Residence, more than 75 Mentors, and 10 Delivery Partners.

Are you eligible? If you are a technology entrepreneur, you may be accepted for participation in the Venture Acceleration Program based on several factors, including product validity, market opportunity, drive and ambition, and team talent. Selection decisions are made by program delivery partners, and the application process may include a program application, a formal evaluation form, pitching to a roundtable of EIRs, one-on-one interviews, and references.
