Are you a Micro-Business owner? Most likely then, you find yourself being a “jack of all trades”—a bookkeeper, a social media coordinator, an account executive, an HR manager, and much more. The BC Micro-Business Training Program, however, is out to prove that the second half of the above saying—“but master of none,” does not apply to you. Funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement, this initiative offers eligible micro-business owners up to $1500 of funding support for training in general business skills such as bookkeeping, marketing, social media, management and other areas.

To take advantage of this program, it is important to act soon because even though the MBT program runs through to March 31, 2014, applications must be received no later than December 31, 2013. Likewise, the program targets a minimum of 1,200 participants and funding support is available to eligible applicants on a first come, first served basis.

In addition to the funding itself, the program offers several other advantages for busy micro-business owners. It will support courses in a variety of formats including online, classroom, and/or one-on-one consultation provided by training institutions across BC such as universities, colleges, PCTIA accredited institutions, and private trainers. Further, eligible business owners from across the province will be able to access training options in every region, and online or eLearning options can accommodate those who are hard-pressed for time.

Funding support includes course fees, course materials, and HST and travel expenses if no local or online options are available, whereas computer programs and upgrades are not covered. Accounting and bookkeeping, IT/social media, computing, management and leadership, and marketing and sales are some examples of training that you may be eligible to receive. The objective of the MBT program is to enable micro-business owners to acquire the general business skills required to manage a small business with a view to improving productivity, decreasing costs, and generating new revenue.

Are you eligible? Approval for this program requires that both the individual applicant (the company owner) and the company itself be eligible. To be classified as a micro-business, the company must have fewer than five employees. The owner-applicant must have no provincially, nationally, or internationally recognized certifications, and no university or post-secondary degree or diploma. Other conditions that apply include being a resident of British Colombia, legally entitled to work in Canada, 19 years of age or over, not a high-school or full-time post-secondary student, not participating in another LMA-funded program, and having a valid municipal business license, an incorporation number, or a CRA tax number.

Interested micro-business owners can fill out the application form online, and once they have done so, a customer service representative will contact them to complete the funding process. For answers to any additional questions, you can call 778-410-2324. The MBT program website also includes detailed information about the program, eligibility requirements, supported training, training providers, answers to frequently asked questions, and contact details.

Do you have the skills and training you need to feel confident and effective in every aspect of your job? If not, the Micro-Business Training Pilot Program (MBT Program) may be just what you are looking for.
